U.S. stock futures were little changed on Monday, with the S&P 500 flat and the Nasdaq 100 down 0.2%, after the index ended last week just shy of an all-time high, as investors awaited the start of earnings season, led by major U.S. banks. Oil prices fluctuated between gains and losses, with Brent crude up 2% at $106.76 per barrel, as traders weighed fresh Houthi attacks on airports in Saudi Arabia alongside Trump's claim of an "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine. In fixed income, Treasury futures edged lower, while the cash market remained closed for the Columbus Day holiday.

What you need to know about the economy and markets
Mexico's industrial activity rose 0.6% month over month in August, following a 0.6% decline in July, and increased 3.6% year over year on a seasonally adjusted basis. Manufacturing and energy each gained 1.2% month over month, while construction was unchanged and mining contracted 1.6%. On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, industrial activity posted cumulative growth of 0.8% from January through August, with manufacturing output still 0.3% below its year-earlier level.
Our Take
The August figures point to a rebound in industrial activity, driven by manufacturing and energy, but fall short of confirming a sustained recovery, as cumulative growth remains weak and manufacturing continues to struggle. Construction has maintained solid year-over-year performance, although its monthly stagnation and the decline in mining underscore that the recovery remains uneven.
Oil prices face opposing forces. The possibility of increased Russian diesel shipments could ease some of the pressure from fuel shortages. However, the impact remains uncertain, depending on whether shipments materialize and whether Ukrainian attacks continue to disrupt Russian energy infrastructure. Meanwhile, Middle East tensions have intensified again following Houthi attacks on an airport in Saudi Arabia.
Our Take
Potential supply relief is competing with geopolitical risks that continue to support a risk premium in oil prices, including attacks in Saudi Arabia and against vessels near Oman and the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, while Russian shipments could help moderate diesel prices, they would be unlikely to offset a prolonged supply disruption in the Middle East on their own.
The European Union and China reached an understanding to limit Chinese exports of hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The agreement includes an initial quota of approximately 350,000 vehicles in 2027, increasing 6% annually, compared with an estimated 800,000 units in 2026. In exchange, China would refrain from retaliatory measures and facilitate market access for certain European products and supplies of rare earths. The deal still requires approval from EU member states.
Our Take
The agreement reduces the risk of a trade war and provides temporary relief for European automakers, although it does not eliminate Chinese competition. Companies such as BYD and Chery could accelerate production within Europe, which falls outside the quota, or shift their focus toward higher-priced vehicles. As a result, the measure should curb imports, but is unlikely to resolve the European auto industry's competitiveness challenges or the trade imbalance with China.
The Reserve Bank of India mounted its most aggressive defense of the rupee in more than a decade as the currency approached 97 per dollar. Measures included opening a special facility to meet the daily dollar demand of three state-owned oil companies and tightening rules on certain foreign-exchange derivatives transactions. The rupee strengthened nearly 1% following the announcement, marking its largest daily gain in several months.
Our Take
The measures signal that the central bank is seeking to contain a disorderly depreciation and curb speculative pressure, although they do not address the underlying drivers, including elevated oil prices, capital outflows, and a stronger U.S. dollar. Intervention may stabilize the rupee in the near term, but keeping it near 97 will require those external pressures to ease. Defending that level could also drain foreign-exchange reserves and raise hedging costs.
Third-quarter earnings will reveal whether U.S. banks managed to sustain revenue and margins despite market volatility and economic uncertainty. Their outlook for credit quality and loan demand will also be critical. Bank stocks have declined in recent months amid concerns that the adoption of AI agents could weaken customer loyalty and erode low-cost deposit bases.
Our Take
Earnings reports will help determine whether the sector's stock market selloff reflects a genuine deterioration in fundamentals or whether share prices have moved ahead of actual results. Cautious guidance on credit quality and growth could extend pressure on bank stocks, while strong results and a stable outlook could support a rebound, although its magnitude will depend on broader economic and financial conditions.
