Markets continue to digest the latest U.S. inflation readings and remarks delivered last night by Kevin Warsh at an IMF event, where the Fed Chair offered no guidance on the monetary policy outlook, prompting traders to scale back their bets on an October rate hike to around 15%. Oil prices held steady, with Brent hovering near $106 a barrel amid directionless trading. In fixed income, bond yields resumed their climb, with the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rising to 5.11%.

What you need to know about the economy and markets
In Mexico, INEGI's Timely Indicator of Private Consumption points to a 0.1% monthly decline in September, following a 0.4% increase in August, on a seasonally adjusted basis. On a year-over-year basis, growth is expected to slow from 0.9% to 0.6%, respectively. The estimates suggest a sluggish end to the third quarter for household spending.
Our Take
Consumption has yet to show a sustained recovery, limiting the domestic market's contribution to economic growth. If these estimates are confirmed, August's increase would have been insufficient to establish a stronger growth trajectory. Although September's expected decline is marginal, the outlook points to continued household caution and a modest contribution from consumption toward year-end.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh offered no guidance on near-term monetary policy during a discussion at the IMF Annual Meetings, although he reaffirmed his commitment to price stability and avoided signaling future policy decisions. He also noted that artificial intelligence is boosting demand before delivering productivity gains, potentially adding to inflationary pressures in the near term.
Our Take
His remarks reinforce expectations for an October pause, while leaving the door open to another rate hike this year. Following his comments, the market-implied probability of an October increase fell from around 27% to below 15%, initially lifting equities and weighing on the dollar.
HR Ratings downgraded Mexico's sovereign credit rating from BBB+ to BBB, with a stable outlook, keeping the country at investment grade. The decision reflects fiscal deterioration and weaker economic growth. The agency projects a broad fiscal deficit of 4.6% of GDP in 2026 and warns that public debt will continue rising, from 54.5% of GDP this year to 61.2% by 2030, amid rigid spending commitments and mounting debt-servicing costs.
Our Take
The downgrade underscores concerns that gradual fiscal consolidation will prove insufficient if growth remains weak and debt continues to rise. Although Mexico retains its investment-grade status, deteriorating credit fundamentals could push investors to demand higher risk premiums, raising borrowing costs. The challenge is to rebuild fiscal space through stronger growth, sustainable revenue sources, and spending discipline that can stabilize debt without sacrificing productive investment.
Eurozone inflation was confirmed at 3.8% year-over-year in September, up from 3.2% in August, in line with the preliminary estimate. The acceleration was driven primarily by energy prices, which surged 18.9% from a year earlier, while services inflation increased from 3.0% to 3.2%. Core inflation also edged up from 2.4% to 2.5%, indicating that price pressures are spreading beyond energy.
Our Take
The reading complicates the ECB's policy outlook, as the central bank faces mounting price pressures in an economy vulnerable to higher energy costs. Although the confirmation brings no additional surprise for markets, accelerating services and core inflation reinforce the case for monetary policy caution.
U.S. industrial production is expected to rise 0.4% month-over-month in September, following a flat reading in August, while capacity utilization is projected to increase from 76.3% to 76.5%. The report, scheduled for release today at 7:15 a.m. Mexico City time, will help assess whether factory activity regained momentum toward the end of the third quarter.
Our Take
A moderate recovery would be consistent with an economy that retains room for expansion despite elevated interest rates. For the Fed, an upside surprise would strengthen the case for caution on inflation, although the data alone would be unlikely to determine the October policy decision.
Corporate News
Tesla shares jumped nearly 5% in premarket trading after the automaker unveiled its highly anticipated Roadster, with the sports car performing stunts using compressed-air thrusters developed alongside SpaceX engineers. The presentation rekindled enthusiasm for the company's innovation capabilities, although production of the model is not expected until 2028, following years of delays.
UniCredit received approval from the European Central Bank to raise its stake in Commerzbank above 30%, with no upper limit, bringing CEO Andrea Orcel closer to taking control of the German lender. The transaction still requires additional regulatory approvals, including from the European Commission, with the process expected to be completed by year-end, when UniCredit would hold approximately 50% of the voting rights.
Proofpoint, backed by private equity firm Thoma Bravo, agreed to acquire cybersecurity company Varonis Systems for approximately $6.3 billion in an all-cash transaction. The acquisition will expand its capabilities in data protection and AI security as businesses face growing risks associated with the adoption of artificial intelligence.
